== 1. THE KEY POINTS

  1. This Listserver group is configured to be completely PRIVATE. Other members cannot see your address, unless you send a message.
  2. The general public (and this includes the Spammers) can see NOTHING -- not the messages, not addresses . . . nothing.
  3. You can UNSUBSCRIBE from this group any time you want -- although we hope you won't.
    ~~~~~~~~
  4. You can send a message to the entire group by using the address loyalsock1966@yahoogroups.com . Put this address in your address book, so it will always be correct.
  5. Please avoid sending EXCESSIVE messages, as people will unsubscribe if they get too many messages with information that is not really interesting to them.
  6. There is some additional information on the Loyalsock 1966 Web Page at
    Loyalsock1966.com (forwards to loyalsock1966.blogspot.com) .
    Note the web page links to a copy of this "New Members Message".
== 2. OVERVIEW
Purpose Of This Group:
This Yahoo Discussion Listserver Group is for any kind of discussion between 1966 class members
WHAT'S A LISTSERVER??
A Listserver (aka Yahoo eGroup) works similar to a newspaper.
When a message is sent,
the Listserver automatically distributes it to all 'subscribers'.
It's an ideal system, because:
.
IDENTIFICATION -- The Listserver automatically adds the 'subject tag' [Loyalsock1966] at the beginning of the subject line, so you will know the message came to you via the Listserver.
== 3. COURTESY
  1. Attachment Size -- Please try to keep any attachments under 100 Kbyes in size.
    REASON: Several members of this group are using telephone dial-up modems, and large attachments will CHOKE their modems.
    Note: The group can also be set to "html off", which means no attachments, and all the text will be plain text. We're trying it with "html allowed" to start out.
  2. General -- No derogatory or abusive comments will be tolerated in this group. Members doing so will have their "Posting Privileges" revoked.
== 4. AUTOMATIC MESSAGE SORTING
We recommend you consider creating a separate email mailbox named 'Loyalsock1966' or '[1966]' or similar. Then use your email program to create a 'Rule' (sometimes called 'filter') that will automatically sort any incoming messages with 'Subject Tag' of '[Loyalsock1966]' into the '1966' mailbox.
Most common "POP" programs (Apple Mail, Microsfoft Outlook Express) email programs have this "Rule" capability. Setting up this Rule will prevent Inbox clutter from Listserver messages accumulating in your Inbox, and eventually irritating you.
Problems
If you're using the free Yahoo web email, I don't think you have this capablilty.
An option might be to get a free Gmail (Gmail.com) from Google, and then forward that Gmail address to your actual Comcast or Verizon address, where you can set up a filter using Outlook Express, or whatever program is on your computer.
== 5. UNSUBSCRIBING
You can UNSUBSCRIBE from this group any time
you no longer want to receive announcements from this Listserver.
We hope you won't unsubscribe, but you always have that option.
You simply send a blank email (no subject, no body)
to the 'unsubscribe address',
loyalsock1966-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com .
(case insensitive)
Then just hit the 'Reply' button in response to the confirmation request that Yahoo will send you.
This 'unsubscribe address' will also be in the 'Moderators Notes'
at the bottom of every email, for your convenient reference.
== 6. RE-SUBSCRIBING (WHEN YOUR ADDRESS CHANGES)
This group is PRIVATE, so you cannot resubscribe yourself.
You'll need to send your new address to Jim Ingram or one of the other moderators.
Options (If you belong to more than 1 Yahoo group)
Alternate Method 1: Yahoo ID -- Note that if you belong to multiple Yahoo groups and your email address changes:
You can update the address ONCE in Yahoo, rather than having to unsubscribe and resubscribe to several groups.
To do this, you first need to get a 'Yahoo ID', then 'link' it to your actual email address using your Yahoo 'Profile'. Consult someone familiar with this process for more info.
Alternate Method 2: Keep a permanent Gmail Address -- Another method is to get a free Gmail address from Google (Gmail.com), and subscribe it to any Yahoo groups you belong to. Then you can forward the Gmail address to your actual address.
 Then if your actual address changes again, you just change the forwarding address ONCE in Gmail, and all your Listserver messages are now forwarded to your new address.
Hotmail gets bad reviews, and is NOT recommended.
== 7. ADDITIONAL LISTSERVER INFORMATION
DISCUSSION --
This group is configured to be 'discussion',
so all members can post announcements.
I.e., it is not a "announcement" group, where only specified members can send announcements.
MESSAGE ARCHIVES --
The Yahoo Listserver automatically stores an 'archive copy' of every announcement sent in the "Message Archives".
These archives are private. If you had a Yahoo ID that is subscribed to the Listserver, you could login and browse the messages by going to the 'Listserver Home Page'
( http://groups.yahoo.com/group/loyalsock1966 ) ;
then use the 'Messages' link in the left menu bar to view messages.
LISTSERVER HELP
HELP -- Additional information on how the Listserver operates
is on the Ingram's Track2.com Listserver Help web page, and also the Yahoo Groups Help Pages .
== 8. CONTACTING THE VOLUNTEER MODERATOR
Any questions not answered by this message,
please call me on the telephone.
