Mail Rule in Outlook Express

Purpose: To set up a mail rule in Outlook Express, that will AUTOMATICALLY sort mail into a specified mailbox.

.
What's a "Rule": A mail Rule (somtimes called "Filter"), automatically sorts incoming into specified mailboxes.

This example shows how to create a rule to detect mail with the 'subject tag' [cpamu] , such as might come from a Yahoo group. You can also use rules to look for other criteria, such as coming from a certain sender or a certain domain name.

A. Create A New Mailbox

  1. Create a new mail folder named [Cpamu] or cpamu or whatever. Use the pulldown menus File > New > Folder.
Note: You can name this folder anything you want. I usually use the brackets "[]" for Yahoo groups, since they usually use the brackets in their subject lines.

    B. Create The Rule

  2. Use the pulldown menus Tools > Message Rules > Mail.

  3. This opens the 'Message Rules' window.

  4. Verify the 'Mail Rules' tab is selected.

  5. Click 'New' tab on right.

    C. The "New Mail Rule" Window
(refer to below JPG, Steps 6 thru 9)

  6. In the box titled '1. Select the Condition for your rule', click the 2nd choice, "Where the Subject line contains specific words".

  7. In the box titled '2. Select the Actions for your rule", click the 1st choice, "Move it to the specified folder".

  8. In the box titled '3 Rule Description', use the links to set it up so it says
"Where the Subject line contains '[cpamu]' " and
"Move it to the Cpamu folder" (or whatever you named the new folder back in Step 1).

  9. In the box titled '4 Name of the rule', enter 'Cpamu' or 'Mail Sorting Rule For Cpamu' or whatever you wish to call it.

  10. Click "ok" to finish.

  11. Send yourself a test message with "[cpamu]" in the subject line. The rule should automatically put the message in the Cpamu folder.
