Susquehanna SeniorNet Plans "Swinging Sunday" Gig

by George W. Gedon

In an effort to emphasize their theme of "No Seniors Left Behind," the Susquehanna SeniorNet based in Williamsport, in conjunction with the James V. Brown Library, will conduct a "Swinging Senior Sunday," April 18, from 1-4 p.m. throughout the library.

The library is normally closed on Sundays (necessitated by State funding cutbacks). However, Janice Trapp, director, said the facility will be open to the public for this special event (mostly Seniors), but not, repeat NOT, for book exchanges or other normal library activities.

Trapp noted the event will utilize all four floors of the library, with greeters on hand to assist with any questions from visiting Seniors.

Among the activities planned is continuous live entertainment by Robert Hutchinson and Ray Tyler playing music familiar to all Seniors from 1:30-3 p.m. in the family room downstairs. This will be followed by a one-hour demonstration & instruction of "Swing Dancing" by several local couples.

Local high school yearbooks (such as LaMemoires) along with old city directories will be available for viewing, as will "coming of age" books. Karen Kline will promote reading materials for Seniors.

Various poetry readings will be presented by C. Lynn Williams, while Jerry Beardsley will present a comedy monolog in the Reference Room area. Roving photography will be handled by Marge Baney.

Promotions and demonstrations of SeniorNet computer programs will be the main thrust of the day with large screens set up for demonstrations and briefings on what the SeniorNet program has to offer.

As an example, Helen Yoas will present a brief demonstration on using the computer to solve genealogy problems.

Art Kline, Chairman of the SeniorNet Learning Center Council, said "We expect a good turnout of Seniors for this event. The purpose is to give all Seniors-whether members of SeniorNet or not-- the opportunity to see and experience just what is available to them… at little or no cost."

Other presentations planned include the new Civil War Alcove that is expected to be open for this event;

Kline also noted, "In addition to the activities throughout the library, light refreshments will be available for the Seniors attending."

He added that several SeniorNet representatives would be guests on the Ken Sawyer radio program on April 14th at 11 a.m to further explain the planned events and respond to questions Seniors might have.

The local SeniorNet Computer program is a five-year-old project that has introduced hundreds of Seniors to the basics of computer operations.

The six-week sessions are small, limited to 10 students; the classes are two hours weekly, conducted by experienced instructors assisted by knowledgeable coaches, thus providing an "almost one-to-one teaching arrangement," Kline said..

Classes are offered in Computer Fundamentals, Basic Computer Applications, Basic Internet, Graphics, Basic Spreadsheet, and others as requested. Lab time is provided. and small fee is required for SeniorNet membership and the individual classes.

Information can be obtained by calling the J.V.Brown Library, (570) 326-0536. In addition SeniorNet Council members are available as speakers for any Organization interested.
