A. What's A Listserver?

What the heck is a "Listserver" and what's an "eGroup" and what's a Yahoo ?

I use the term Listserver and eGroup more or less interchangeably. Yahoo.com is one of several companies that make Listservers available to us. A Listserver is an email announcement system.

Does a Listserver function like an electronic newspaper ?

A Listserver (eGroup) is similar to an electronic newspaper in the following ways:
  1.  Delivery -- With a Listserver, a writer creates an announcement message,
then sends (posts) it to the Listserver, and the Listserver
delivers that message via email to all subscribers.
  2. Unsubscribing -- If a reader doesn't want to receive the announcements,
they can UNSUBSCRIBE themselves from that Listserver.
  3. Subscribing -- If a person who is not subscribed wants to begin receiving the announcements,
they can SUBSCRIBE themselves to the Listserver.
  4. Archives -- Whenever a Listserver announcement is sent,
the Listserver stores a copy of that announcement on an ARCHIVE web page,
    which you can BROWSE.

For more details, see below Section "D. How's a Listserver similar to a newspaper ?"

How can I tell when an email is from the Listserver ?

Announcements will be identified by the subject tag [SeniorNet]
at the beginning of the subject line.

B. Unsubscribing, Browsing, & Subscribing

How can I UNSUBSCRIBE from this Listserver ?

You can UNSUBSCRIBE from this group any time.

You simply send a blank email (no subject, no body)
to the "unsubscribe address"

 SusquehannaSeniorNet-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com

then reply to the "request for confirmation of unsubscription" message
that Yahoo will send you.

This "unsubscribe address" is included in every announcement.

How can I browse the announcement emails when I'm away from my own computer ?

You can browse announcements in the Track2 DancenNet Listserver's message archives at

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SusquehannaSeniorNet/messages

How can my friends subscribe to this Listserver ?

Your friends can SUBSCRIBE to this group any time
they want to receive these announcements.

They simply send a blank email (no subject, no body)
to the "subscribe address"

 SusquehannaSeniorNet-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

then reply to the "request for confirmation of subscription" message
that Yahoo will send you.

This "subscribe address" is included in every announcement.

C. Add'l Info -- Web Page, Multiple Groups, Publicizing

Where can I find the descriptions of the SeniorNet classes ?

Additional information about SeniorNet classes and the Listserver is on the web pages at

http://www.SusquehannaSeniorNet.org

If I belong to, for example, 4 different Yahoo eGroups (Listservers), and my email changes -- How can I update my address for all 4, rather than having to unsubscribe and re-subscribe 4 times ?

If you belong to several Yahoo groups, and your email address changes,
you can update the address ONCE in Yahoo,
rather than having to unsubscribe and resubscribe for each group

To do this, you need a Yahoo id that is "linked" to your regular email. The details of this are beyond the scope of this email, but you can get more info from Yahoo's Groups Help, or telephone me.

Are there any easy ways I can help publicize this Listserver ?

Encourage your friends to "subscribe" themselves.

The larger the membership of this Listserver,
the better the "word" will get passed around when new classes are offered.

Why am I seeing advertisements in these Listserver announcements ?

Most messages sent via the Listserver, will contain an advertisement. SeniorNet does not in any way endorse nor control these ads. Yahoo inserts these ads to raise revenue, in order that we can use this Listserver free of charge.

D. How's A Listserver Similar To A Newspaper ?

If you are not familiar with Listservers (eGroups), you can think of them as
being similar to an electronic newspaper in the following ways:

Delivery --

Newspaper: A writer creates an announcement article,
and the newspaper delivers that announcement to all subscribers.

Listserver: A announcer writes an announcement message,
then emails (posts) it to the Listserver, and the Listserver
delivers that message via email to all subscribers.

Unsubscribing --

Newspaper: If a reader decides that they no longer want to receive the articles,
they can UNSUBSCRIBE from that newspaper.

Listserver: If a reader doesn't want to receive the announcements,
they can UNSUBSCRIBE themselves from the Listserver.

Subscribing --

Newspaper: If a person who is not subscribed wants to begin receiving the articles,
they can SUBSCRIBE to the newspaper.

Listserver: If a person who is not subscribed wants to begin receiving
announcements, they can SUBSCRIBE themselves to the Listserver.

Archives --

Newspaper: Whenever a newspaper edition is published,
your local library stores a copy of the articles its ARCHIVES,
which you can BROWSE.

Listserver: Whenever a Listserver announcement is sent,
the Listserver stores a copy of that announcement on an ARCHIVE web page,
which you can BROWSE.

Changing Address --

Newspaper: If a subscriber moves and their ADDRESS CHANGES,
they can have the newspaper delivered to their new address.

Listserver: If a subscriber moves and their email ADDRESS CHANGES,
they can have the Listserver deliver the announcements to their new email address.

Cost --

Newspaper: To receive the newspaper, the subscriber has to pay a subscription fee.

Listserver: To receive the Listserver announcements, there is no cost.
Yahoo currently allows us to operate these Listservers for FREE.
Yahoo oftens insert ads into the messages in order to defray their costs.

Maintaining Editorial Quality --

Newspaper: To protect its readers from bad articles,
a newspaper will not allow inaccurate or slanderous articles to be printed.

Listserver:  To protect its readers from SPAM,
this Listserver is currently set to "announce only",
so only designated announcers can send messages.
(I.e., this Listserver is not set to be a "discussion group" where all members can send messages.)

Additional Listserver Information--

Additional information on how the Listserver operates
is on the "Listserver Help" web page at
http://www.track2.com/trk2/help.listservers.shtml
and the Yahoo "eGroups Help" page at
http://help.yahoo.com/help/groups .
